			<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The emission of greenhouse gases are a problem which is treated seriously nowadays. Especially inland waterway vessels have an enormous potential for optimization hence to their relatively aged engine technology. This is caused due to the persistence of ship structure as well as the drive line, which allow a very long life span of these vessels. Because of the right of continuance, they often don’t meet reasonable emission values. Supplementary in metropolitan areas like Piraeus, all the Mediterranean ports, Berlin, Hamburg or the Rhein/Ruhr area, this old engine technology is a stress for human health. In these areas, subject like particulate matter and noise emissions getting more and more important. Therefore, the department “<strong>Design and Operation of ProMarine Innovations</strong>” (Athens) designs a pusher tug for the capital region Athens &#8211; Piraeus with an innovative power unit and energy concept. Regional transports shall be carried out with electrical power from battery stacks. Supraregional transports will be realized by the support of fuel cells as range extender. Using renewable energy for the battery charging, this ship will operate as a fully “Zero Emission Ship”. All the advantages of hybrid power management will combined to ensure eco-friendly, reliable and economic carriage of freight. The first challenge of such an innovative design is the setting of specifications, which shall be done as detailed as possible.</span></p>

The project aims to solve the air pollution problem in highly touristic cruise ports (i.e. Piraeus, Heraklion, Santorini, Mykonos etc.). During the touristic season (i.e April-October) the cruise ships (and other types of touristic vessels) spend many hours within the ports, burning diesel or low sulfur oil as marine fuel (according the IMO regulation).<br />
The idea is to provide these ships with electricity produced by an on-board floating LNG power plant system in a new built or retrofit open-type vessel/or barge. LNG is more economic efficient than Diesel and produces less emissions than any other fossil fuel.<br />
The LNG will be stored in containers or in a large storage tank. This vessel will provide electricity power (cold ironing) to the cruise vessels, where there is no such current support (Piraeus) or where there is no alternative future solution – onshore facility (Santorini). The advantage of this vessel is that there is no need for the built-up of an onshore facility in the port to supply electricity to the cruise vessels. This can boost the applicability and marketability of this solution to a number of different areas in Greece.<br />
Additionally, this plant will be equipped with batteries. The vessel will have the ability to connect to the electricity system power grid in order to:<br />
For Piraeus:<br />
•Sell excess “Green” electricity to the grid<br />
•Store electricity from the grid during the night (low prices, increase system stability)<br />
For the islands:<br />
•Sell excess “Green” electricity to the island’s non-interconnected grid during the peak season and in emergencies (outage of a power plant, blackouts).<br />
•Store electricity from the grid in order to increase the penetration of the existing renewable energy generation plants (Wind, Solar energy).</span></p>

This is the process of providing shoreside electrical power to a ship at berth, while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off.</span></strong></em></p>

			<p><span style="font-size: 20px;"><strong>How does cold ironing work</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 16px;">Cold ironing goes way back into shipping’s past, as it first appeared when all ships were using coal-fired engines. Specifically, when a ship was berthing at port, it did not have to continue to feed the fire, and the iron engines would cool down, going totally cold. This is from where this process took its name from.<br />
Nowadays however, when ships are berthed, they use their auxiliary engines to support some basic functions. This must be taken into consideration, as it generates SOx, NOx, CO2 and particle discharge as well as noise and vibration.<br />
To mitigate these issues, cold ironing comes to offer a solution. This technology is basically an anti-pollution measure, to reduce air pollution produced from diesel generators, through the use of shore electric power as an alternative.<br />
During cold ironing, the ship turns off its engines while berthed and plugs into an onshore power source. The ship’s power load is then transferred to the shore-side power supply without disrupting onboard services.<br />
With this process, emergency equipment, refrigeration, cooling, heating, lighting, and other equipment are still able to receive continuous electrical power, while the ship loads or unloads its cargo.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">In fact, studies have found that by using this method, many environmental and social benefits are generated.</p>

			<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The USV is equipped with a &#8220;Sea Proven&#8221; anti-roll system which reduces roll by 40%. Thanks to this mechanism, the USV is operational up to Sea State 5 andensures the launching and recovery of the drones by high sea states (up to Sea State 4).</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">Their monolithic composite material structure is particularly robust and approved by Bureau Veritas for all-weather sailing.</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The USV design also takes into account the constraints and interfaces for its<br />
integration on the mother ship of the Belgian-Dutch solution which was designed to store, maintain, launch, retrieve and operate two USVs by high sea states (Sea State 5).</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The fully integrated computer-controlled propulsion system is designed for long range unmanned hydrography and subsea mapping missions.</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The system is designed to provide up to six days on station at survey speeds and up to 10 hours between automatic battery recharges from the onboard generator. The recharging cycles are fully automatic under computer control.</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">“Our power requirements for this USV were very specific,” Mike Spanopoulos CEO and founder of ProMarine Innovations, said in a prepared statement. “The vessel required extended endurance on station as well as a quiet operating mode while performing acoustic research operations.”</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The USV can operate under remote control by an operator ashore or semi-autonomously to implement a mission plan. All on-board systems are monitored with data connections to the remote base station. The operator can control all interfaces, view video feeds or put the ASV into automatic waypoint navigation mode, in which throttle and steering are under full computer control. The boat’s helm station can be optionally manned for operation in congested waterways and ramp operations when required.</p>

<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">Electric / hybrid ships (4), in this case passenger ships and Ro-Ro, are a structural element of the proposal as they are one of the main off-takers of the energy produced by the RES units of the islands. These ships are loaded either in a central port (2) through cold ironing or shore power services. The development of electricity services can be done between one of the eligible islands.</span></li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The proposal also includes the construction and operation of two (2) electric / hybrid ships (4) through cooperation with the Department of Shipbuilding of NTUA, a Greek shipyard of suitable scope &#8211; e.g. ProMarine Shipyards SA &#8211; and specialized LNG engine company &#8211; e.g. Wärtsilä. In this context it can be developed in a central port (2) or on an important eligible island (in this case island-4) and a small LNG unit and catering services (bunkering). One is expected to play an important role. which will coordinate the project (1) and develop the LNG station. Another important off-taker can be desalination plants (with reverse osmosis technology) in central high-demand islands (6)</span></li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The proposed coupling of energy from RES and Maritime Transport addresses to a large extent the very important problem of &#8220;matching&#8221; the production of electricity from stochastic RES (wind and PV), and the demand as they have been recognized &#8211; in addition to consumers in local level &#8211; and reliable potential off-takers of different levels of absorption safety (respectively: hybrid ships-electric vehicles, desalination plants and H2 production plants).</span></li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: 16px;"> ProMarine will be the administrator of the control system of production and distribution of energy (electricity, LNG and H2) in collaboration with a specialized company (see above) but also the coordinator of the project (1) in combination with a specialized research body (p .x. NTUA, CERTH, etc.).</span></li>

<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">We aim to make everyone understand that the inflatable has not prevailed for fashion reasons, but for its obvious and substantial advantages, which are known to have been appreciated by agencies and public organizations (Coast Guard, Army, Fire Department, etc.)</li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The first and essential reason why it is superior to other boats is the buoyancy created by the air chambers, which in order to achieve another similar boat it is necessary for the reefs and the spaces under the floor to be completely sealed. This of course results in the light part of the whole being at the lowest point of the boat, while on the contrary all the weights are placed above the deck and therefore the balance becomes precarious. But regardless of the weights, there is another main reason that negatively affects the balance and it is none other than the air that is trapped in the watertight sections which wants to move upwards. In contrast to an inflatable, the air is at its highest points, ie in the air chambers, as a result of which they keep it stable on the sea surface in a position of perfect balance. Stability combined with buoyancy are factors that allow a high-speed inflatable boat to have the required safety in extreme situations, almost eliminating the possibility of capsizing.</li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"> Finally, there are other technical reasons that make inflatable boats advantageous in other areas which we mention below.</li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The hinges of a plastic, in order not to let water pass through, must be made higher than those of an inflatable, with the consequence that it<br />
becomes more sensitive to strong side winds but also to make it difficult to collect people when it must be used as a lifeline.</li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"> All closed polyester constructions, which replace the air chambers, do not have the required elasticity in blows and when inside they are filled with polyurethane, in case of rupture they are very difficult to repair.</li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;">We think that after all this, there is no point in questioning the reasons why the inflatable boat has an obvious advantage.</li>
<li>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: 16px;"> Even CE certification for inflatable boats, due to their buoyancy and stability, has other measures and weights, such as the stability test with all the cargo on one side.</li>
</ul>
